Bethel Rd wreck 2.5.15

Picture of 1/31/15 Wreck at Bethel Church and Hwy 212 W–The Monticello News

Are you sick of seeing the words “Another wreck at Bethel Church Rd. and Hwy 212 W”? You should be, but here goes….there was another wreck there since our last post.

No joke! And this week-end there was still glass in the road from the wreck Friday evening, 2/6/15 at 7:24PM. Today there is still a large chunk of the front end and the front bumper from a vehicle involved in the wreck on the side of the road at the intersection.

Is this just stupidity as some say? Something is very, very wrong to have this many wrecks at this intersection. Maybe it is people following GPS, and GPS does not tell them to stop. It is hard to believe that anyone would be that incognizant of what is going on when they are driving, but something is happening.

Something is also seriously wrong if the GDOT cannot do something immediately at this intersection or allow the County to do something.

  • 5 or 6 white lines in the road from the stop back at least 20 feet
  • Double “Stop Ahead” signs—one on each side of the road with yellow reflectors down the posts
  • Red reflectors down the Stop sign posts
  • “Cross Traffic Does Not Stop” signs on the Stop sign post itself, as well as on the Stop Ahead sign posts

These suggestions, provided by citizens that have contacted us, would take little time and not much money to get done. Will they help? Who knows!

How many people have to be injured or lives have to be lost, or how many wrecks do there have to be before something is done here? The BOC says they can’t do anything since it is a State highway.

Common sense says lives are more important than silly rules as to who can put up a sign at a dangerous intersection. If State law says the County can’t do anything, then what is the penalty? What is the penalty for trying to do something to keep people from being injured or even killed?

The BOC needs to step up here and do anything they can at this intersection. From January 1, 2013 to October 9, 2014 there had been 9 wrecks at this intersection.

Here is a list of the recent wrecks at this intersection—all within the last 4 months (from 10/10/14 to present):

  1. October 10, 2014—FATAL—6:30PM
  2. October 24, 2014—7:30PM
  3. October 27, 2014—8:00AM
  4. January 31, 2015—1:00PM
  5. February 5, 2015—10:30PM
  6. February 6, 2015—7:30PM

(times are approximate and are times people came upon the wreck at the intersection)

During the past 24 months there have been 15 wrecks here with one fatality and several injuries.

It seems all we can do now is wait for GDOT.  Recent traffic counters in the road are great, but they are not going to keep someone else from being involved in a wreck here.

Your comments are welcome.

Mary, you said in the post the BOC claims they cannot do anything because we are talking about a state highway — Bethel Church Road is not a state highway … It is county !! All the stop signs and reflectors would be on Bethel Church because it is the feeder road — GA 212 is a primary (if that is the correct term) that you wouldn’t put a stop sign on anyhow — Although they did put STOP signs on Hwy 11 and Hwy 380 .. was that GDOT ?

I don’t understand why the GDOT can’t make it a 4 way stop. There are several others already on 212 & intersecting roads including state & local highways.
