LANDFILL FEES INCREASE & SOLID WASTE COMMITTEE MEETS TOMORROW-JUNE 11

June 10, 2015

The SWC meets again tomorrow at 5:15PM. The agenda:

SWC061115Mike Benton, county financial officer, is supposed to attend and explain the landfill costs in the ledgers to the Committee.

At the last BOC meeting, the landfill fees were increased. As discussed before, the county was charging $25 per ton and paying $45 per ton to Advanced Disposal for items taken to the landfill and put in the rolloff containers. The BOC voted to increase the fees to $45 per ton. It was not clear if this included commercial dumping in the C&D landfill or not; that fee is $30 per ton.

In addition the minimum fee charged to citizens increased from $5 to $10. While fees may need to be increased, they also need to be increased on commercial users such as Georgia Pacific. The motion did not address commercial users and the fees they pay.

These new fees will go into effect July 1, 2015 and were approved with a 5-0 vote of the BOC.

What can and what can I not take to the landfill?

Basically, you can take stuff to recycle, you can take old tires (you pay a fee), you can take junk like wood, concrete, brick, mattresses, etc. You can not take garbage–stuff that is picked up by curbside. This is the easy answer, not all inclusive of course.
