WHAT DO PUBLIC WORKS EMPLOYEES DO ON A RAINY DAY LIKE THIS?

November 2, 2015

This is a question that citizens and commissioners alike have asked, and no one seems to know the answer.

Are they out unclogging culverts and ditches? There are places on county roads that have water standing on them every time it rains, and nothing is ever done about it. No one ever sees Public Works out when it is raining. They can’t grade or mow during this weather. Do they just sit at the shop when it rains?

Many times even during good, sunny weather we have to wonder where these employees are and what they are doing. A few months ago a motorgrader sat on J.H.Whitaker Rd. for 2 weeks, never moved, and then was gone. No work was done. Recently a citizen sent us this picture of a motorgrader parked on Ross Rd. at 9:45AM.

RossRd101515.945amEither the operator was out sick or just didn’t show up to work. No one would know because the supervisors don’t make it a habit to ride around and check up on anyone.

So what do the 19+ public works employees do on a rainy day, especially after a rainy week-end?

Public works employees are to work from 7AM to 5:30PM Monday through Thursday. They are off Friday-Sunday. The 19 employees listed on a recent report, together, make $263.75 per hour or $2637.50 per day. This doesn’t include the free health we pay for, social security match, workers compensation, and any other benefits.

Again we ask, what did Public Works get accomplished today? Did we get our $3,000 worth of taxes from Public Works employees today? Anyone that has answers, please let us know.

I find this very amusing. I have installed Solar Energy Systems in the north year round. On a 3 or 4 story or taller roof, wind at 30-40 MPH with two feet of snow on the ground and on the roof NINETEEN DEGREES! In some of those areas, specifically West Virginia (!) if you didnt work year round, you just wouldnt work.

So what are your guys, a bunch of sissies or what? Plenty of unemployed city/county workers out there who arent afraid of a little rain.

Im just telling it like it is folks!
