(JDA=4 County Development Authority=Stanton Springs)

After cancelling their regularly called June 28th meeting about 10 days ago, the JDA has all of a sudden decided they need a “special called meeting” on the same day, June 28th at 7:30pmThe only thing on the agenda is Executive Session—Land Acquisition.

Is Kippy Clarke back with another deal?  Will the taxpayers suffer a multi-million dollar loss on a new land deal?

Or, on the other hand, is the JDA going to buy land?  If so, with what?  More loans?  They have no money as the taxpayers just took over, and have to make payments on, the JDA’s $1.3M debt with the Bank of Madison.

AGENDA.JDA special called meeting 06.28.16 Land AcquistionThe above agenda was sent out by the JDA barely 24 hours before the scheduled meeting.  This 24-hour notification is an excellent way to keep people from knowing about the meetings or being able to attend them.  Open meetings laws say the agenda should be posted as far in advance as possible (up to 2 weeks) unless it is an emergency; then notice can be given with a 24-hour notice.  It is hard to imagine an  emergency meeting for land acquisition.

Citizens, be informed and stay informed!  Only by being informed, can the citizens understand what is being done and talked about, and then press our officials to make good decisions for everyone in Jasper County.  That is our goal with the Taxdogs blog.

  1. Baxter wins again says:

Didn’t we read recently that Baxter or Shire or whoever it is now, wants more tax incentives? Baxter buys one more acre of land, and JDA gives them 10 more years of tax incentives. The taxpayers never see a single dime to save them on their taxes in 20 years. JDA will be issuing more bonds for Baxter, too. Wait and see!

They must be learning from our BOC on the correct way to do back room deals.

  3. Here We Go Again says:

It matters little whether it’s sell or buy with Crony Inc aka Joint Development Authority. Either way the taxpayers get left holding the stinky end of the debt service sticky because JDA is not in the save the taxpayers money business. JDA is in the debt finance business.

What? Some of you don’t get that the same people making money off financing taxpayer debt are also the very ones doing the hard sell in the unrepentant name of economic development? Always for the greater good, of course. Rubes do love a gimmick.

Oh, about those choices. We don’t get any. JDA knows best.
