Jasper County uses property tax bills to collect other types of fees such as solid waste/garbage, hospital support, and “fire hydrant” fees for JCWSA. HB 204 would prevent local governments from placing these or any other fees or assessments on property tax bills.
These fees could be included in the same mailing, but they would have to billed separately from the property tax bill. This legislation would also require that any payments received first be applied to the property tax bill.
By separating the fees from the property taxes, property owners could see much easier just what all they are being billed for. This is a good step in making things more transparent to the property owners–those paying the bulk of the revenues the county receives.
The link below is a copy of the bill passed by the Georgia House of Representatives today. Please contact Senator Burt Jones and ask him to support this bill so property owners can realize what fees and assessments they are paying in addition to property taxes.
