TO BE CIVILIZED WE NEED HIGHER TAXES AND MORE DEBT

Jasper County is getting mighty civilized.

 May 19, 2017

During the last BOC meeting the FY2018 budget was discussed and adopted.  The BOC allowed citizen comments.

Gene Trammell’s widow, Norma Jeanne Trammell, urged the BOC to increase taxes and add more debt.  As reported in the Monticello News, she said “taxes are a price you pay for living in a civilized world.”  The BOC is considering adding $7.5M of debt through a bond offering that must be approved by the voters, asking for a 1% SPLOST tax, and setting a $10M budget.

Jasper County is getting mighty civilized.

Jasper County’s property taxes are high and have gone up even higher– 20% over the past 4 years.  The BOC adopted a budget of $10,068,310 on Monday, May 15th.  No budget hearings have been advertised by the BOC.

The BOC has discussed “cuts” and using a lower millage rate to offset the new property value increase many property owners received again this year.  Both Comm. Henry and Comm. Luke  have stressed the BOC should lower the millage to prevent a tax increase

The School Board has passed a tentative budget which includes a 3.13% property tax increase, and they have advertised it in the paper.  They will hold budget hearings on 5/23/17 at 7:00pm, 5/31/17 at 6:30pm, and 6/20/17 at 7:00pm.

Citizens, be informed and stay informed!  Only by being informed, can the citizens understand what is being done and talked about, and then press our officials to make good decisions for everyone in Jasper County.  That is our goal with the Taxdogs blog.

  1. Alan W. Cox says:

They say you have to hit bottom before you can start to pull yourself up…well it sounds like some of you are getting there. If you want change it is going to take a little work, get off the couch and go vote. Our voter turn out is dismal. Vote for the right people for a change, quit letting the Monticello special interests put their hand selected puppets in office. If you go to the forums or debates at election time it is easy to spot them. Keep Bruce Henry and get the others out ASAP. Go to the BOC meetings, get the right people in there and they will listen and let you speak, get the eye rollers out.

Don’t want to do those things, quit complaining and get your check books out.

  2. We Get What We Allow says:

    @ What the …
I agree, the nauseating whine of the self-defeated is absolutely disgusting . The snivel that irks me the most is when the complacent self – loathing cowards declare ” What you want to talk about it for, ain’t nothin’ you can do about it .”
There is no greater guarantee of losing a war than to surrender even before the battle has begun.

    • What's the point says:

no matter what the issue is that you bring to the board it will always be the 3 to 2 vote. I have never seen or lived in such a corrupt local government!

  3. Who is really behind the push? says:

Who is pushing Mrs. Trammell to promote higher taxes and a bond debt that would last 30 years? Could it be Sheriff Pope who campaigned heavily for her husband and wants a new $3,000,000 administrative building? Mrs. Trammell has never seemed to be political before and rarely attended a meeting while her husband was on the BOC. It is strange that she is all of sudden so interested in our taxes and urging the commissioners to push them higher.

    • O' To Be A Presbyterian Progressive says:

Also strange is that for the average citizen an audience before the Grand Poohbahs of the BoC gets you an exasperated eye roll and maybe a yawn, but let a Presbyterian approach the high and mighty and whatever is requested is always granted It’s just how things are done in Jasper County. .

      • What the .... says:

There are a couple of things that folks say that just boil my blood.
“That’s just the way it has always been done” then there is “Thats not how we did it at (insert previous employer)” Just because it is the way it has always been done doesn’t mean it is something we should continue with. Of course, I’ve been living here for quite some time and I have yet to figure out how to actually change it. Short of the majority of this county banning and sticking together and put our foot down and never vote another one like them to serve on the board. We need some good strong individuals in each district to run and stand up to these self serving hypocrites and take our County back!

  4. Does not make sense says:

Based on the property taxes and school taxes we pay, we must be highly civilized.

  5. Say What? says:

What is so civilized about taxing people out of their homes? There is nothing civilized about adding debt, some of which lands on the backs of our children.

In my mind, civilized people are responsible for their own needs and wants.

I had no idea that higher taxes equates to higher civilization. I must have missed that teaching.

  6. sick & tired says:

who elected norma to give us advice? Is she some kind of politician or what? Maybe she needs to take a hike or something.

  7. Stuck In La La Land says:

Norma Jean, 1904 called and wants it’s Oliver Wendell Holmes quote back. By the way, there was no income tax in 1904, nor hundreds of other taxes since created to rob the taxpayers of their hard earned cash, yet America was quiet civilized then , even more so than today. How do explain that Norma Jean?

None of the taxes listed below existed over a 100 years ago when supposedly Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes made the famous quote modern liberals love to dredge up to justify ever increasing taxation.

Once again, none of these taxes existed 100 years ago. Then, America was the world’s wealthiest nation. Then, we had no national debt. Then, we had a thriving economy that was the envy of the free and developed world.

Now we have rampant unemployment. Now we have a weak dollar. Now we have spiraling debt over $14 trillion. Now we have a terrible economic situation. Isn’t it obvious? We should stop this tax insanity before it’s too late.

Politicians of both parties govern the nation and decide what laws should be passed. They are responsible for our current situation. But some are more responsible than others: the Democrats.

  8. Message From a Less Than Civilized Citizen says:

It amazes me that the liberals move to Jasper County from metro Atlanta and immediately want to tax the locals to have the same ‘quality of life’ they moved from. These highfalutin “civilized” types move next to the “simple minded” folk who love the country and its laid-back lifestyle. Immediately they want to tax the simpletons to change the county into their “civilized” lifestyle. To add insult to injury the “civilized immigrants” want to borrow money to support their improved quality of life, which adds more debt via having to pay interest on that debt. As a simple-minded immigrant to Jasper County, just fix the potholes, and provide the bare essential services to the citizens. In exchange for that, I expect low taxes.

  9. The Price Of Being Easy Prey says:

The nonsense of a civilization tax used as an excuse to continue to raise peoples’ property tax is simply the voice of the parasitic special interests of Jasper County attempting to justify their avarice driven agenda, which is growth at any cost. They know who they are.

Values for Jasper County property owners have vastly outpaced real growth, including services and will continue to do so as long as the lie that one’s property value increases with disconnected countywide property sales is allowed to stand.

If the BOC were truly working for the benefit of the property owners, they would be petitioning State legislature to cap property values for existing older homes, as is now being attempted by the Texas State Senate with SB 376.

Lawmakers call for property tax reform during 2017 state legislative session
    https://communityimpact.com/houston/the-woodlands/at-the-capitol/2017/01/18/lawmakers-call-property-tax-reform-2017-state-legislative-session/

The part of SB 376 about making the Chief Appraiser an elected office cannot be overly appreciated and would go a long way towards giving taxpayers representation that is more credible on issues of property valuation.

As it stands now, the taxpayers of Jasper County have no voice on the tax rates or property values that determine how much our tax bills increase every year. Without state level reform, property owners will continue to be easy prey for local self-serving opportunists who falsely peddle public debt as the price of civilized society.

  10. When Push Comes To Shove says:

So when did running a fiscal irresponsible county government and forcing hard working people from Jasper County due to increasingly unaffordable property tax hikes become the hallmark of civilization ?
I guess at some point only those who can afford to pay get to stay. Good Christian attitude there. Progressives…phttt.

  11. fed up says:

The only improvement I’ve seen in this town for the past 5 years is fancy new police cars that constantly haul a$$ around my neighborhood and do nothing about the people that run stop signs, speed, and refuse to stop for a bus my children are getting on. Some of these officers live in my neighborhood and have kids! Oh wait, I forgot to mention the sidewalk that ends before you get to venture court where the gym is. How much did that project cost us?
