JASPER COUNTY TAXPAYERS OVER 65 HAVE LONG ASKED FOR A BREAK ON SCHOOL TAXES

May 17, 2018

There is only one way to get a break on school taxes in Jasper County—vote NO on the ELOST of $9.9 million.  Your property taxes are never going down, but you can vote to save 1% of all purchases by voting NO on ELOST.

Tomorrow is the last day for early voting.  Voting day is next Tuesday, May 22.

What’s at stake?  More textbooks? Computers? No, a new $8M stadium.

This ELOST is for $9.9M of obligation debt the School Board wants to use to build a new stadium complex.

According to the legal ad, this new debt will start in 2020 and go through 2035.  Since this ELOST will only be for 5 years, there will have to be 3 consecutive ELOST approvals to pay off the entire debt.

The first $8M they want to raise in this self imposed tax will be used to pay $1.5M on 2005 bonds still outstanding and $6.5M on “projects.”  The main project is a new stadium complex.

so the choice here is either a sales tax everyone pays, or a property tax only some of us pay? how about option C, where we stop taking on debt?

    • taxdogs says:

The problem is some people pay BOTH sales tax and property taxes. It makes you wonder just how much money the people that don’t pay property taxes actually spend in Jasper County to support their “we need it” projects–new Rec building, new stadium, etc.

  2. Teresa says:

I personally believe that most that are pushing for this are not property owners or have young children that will benefit from the taxes others will pay. Same thing happened with the vote for the tax that will fund the new gym at the rec department. It will benefit only a small part of the population, not everyone.

  3. School Tax Is The Financialization Of Dumbing Down says:

Public school is institutionalized child abuse. Get your kids out.

“In our secular society, school has become the replacement for church, and like church it requires that its teachings must be taken on faith.”
    ― John Taylor Gatto

“School has become the world religion of a modernized proletariat, and makes futile promises of salvation to the poor of the technological age.”
    ― Ivan Illich, Deschooling Society

“The home-schooling movement has quietly grown to a size where one and half million young people are being educated entirely by their own parents; last month the education press reported the amazing news that, in their ability to think, children schooled at home seem to be five or even ten years ahead of their formally trained peers.”

  4. Richard says:

I can only hope your people will wake up.  the voters in my county didn’t and we’re saddled with debt.
