WATERS BRIDGE ON HWY 212 W OVER JACKSON LAKE TO BE REPLACED

Today project cost does not seem to be an important factor.  Politics enters into every decision, making the project cost and completion time excessive.

The public is invited to a Georgia DOT open house to view and discuss proposals to replace the State Route (SR) 212 bridge at Lake Jackson next Tuesday, May 22, at the Alcovy High School Cafeteria, 14567 GA 36, Covington, GA from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Plans currently show the estimated total investment of $13 million.  There will be no detour during construction, as the new bridge will be built parallel to the current structure.

Estimated construction time is 24 months and will likely begin in Fall 2020.

Why would a 500 foot bridge cost $13 million and take 24 months to complete?

Some interesting facts and comparison of time and cost.

  • The Golden Gate Bridge took just over four years to build. Construction began in January 0f 1933 and was open to automobile traffic in May of 1937.
  • The total length of the Golden Gate Bridge from abutment to abutment is 8,981 feet (2,737 m), the second longest main span in the USA.
  • The cost of the Golden Gate Bridge was $27M in 1930’s, which is $1.5B in today’s money.

  • The bridge over Jackson Lake will cost 6.4 times more per foot than the Golden Gate Bridge (in today’s money) and take 2 years to build, even though the Golden Gate bridge is 18 times longer and has a cable structure.

Today project cost does not seem to be an important factor.  Politics enters into every decision, making the project cost and completion time excessive.

  1. No Dollar Left Unspent says:

Government has become a very lucrative enterprise for the racketeers that run it .

  2. Sterling says:

Why did you use the GG bridge as a comparison and not the bridge over the river on hwy 16 between Butts and Jasper County.

    • taxdogs says:

Because I couldn’t find statistics on that bridge, and it was also done as a GDOT project.

    • taxdogs says:

Also, we wanted to compare how things are done today, where you have twice as many people on the job so half of them can stand around doing nothing, to how it was done when everyone worked and keeping cost down was important.
