BOC TO PUSH CITY-COUNTY CONSOLIDATION MONDAY NIGHT-AUGUST 6 MEETING

August 4, 2018

Are you ready?  Craig Salmon has been pushing the City-County Consolidation issue for months, and Carl Pennamon has been a long time advocate.

The BOC will vote Monday night to put Consolidation on the November ballot.

AGENDA ITEM: Question for the Nov 6 Ballot Regarding Public Support for Consolidation of Jasper County, City of Monticello and the City of Shady Dale

Yes, you want consolidation or No, you don’t.  The ballot won’t tell you about all the debt the county will take over for the city, including the new Megasite debt.

Does the City want this?  At the last Service Delivery meeting, at least two council persons –David Wease and Cynthia Miller said they did not.  The Mayor did not seem to be in favor either.

Of course, we have to wonder if a vote will matter anyway.  We voted against JCWSA being set up, and guess what?  They did it anyway, and this BOC signed a 31 year bailout agreement for it.

Please post your opinions, and spread the word.

Citizens, be informed and stay informed!  Only by being informed, can the citizens understand what is being done and talked about, and then press our officials to make good decisions for everyone in Jasper County.  That is our goal with the Taxdogs blog.

  1. How Much More Can The Taxpayers Take????? says:

The taxpayers of Jasper county outside the city limits of Monticello have enough problems as it is. It wasn’t enough the BOC raised my taxes by not adjusting the millage rate to compensate for increased property values, but now they want us to bail out Monticello for failing to get its financial house in order. Maybe my commissioner from district 5 is selling tickets the other commissioners have given him for a cruise on the Titanic. Our tax burden is sinking this county.

  2. Absolutely not says:

All the debt the county has already accumulated appall me. The city has even more debt than the county. The taxpayers are not gaining anything by consolidating the city and the county. It just foists the poor decisions that the city leaders have made onto the county commissioners.

If the consolidation is a question on the ballot in November, I hope it will energize the citizens to get off their tush and vote.

Just remember: debt increase = tax increase

  3. Disgusted Citizen says:

I am so disgusted with our commissioners! I can’t believe they keep getting away with this ridiculousness. If this makes it to the ballot, I will vote NO, and i can assure you i will discuss this with every citizen i meet! Self serving public servants need to go!

  4. Get Ready For More Fiscal Rape says:

The seed corn eating rats that control Jasper County government are going to get what they want, regardless the people’s vote. They always have. Their bank accounts are more important that the fiscal sustainability of Jasper County debt. They only see dollar signs; they could care less if Jasper County government is fair to the tax payers, only that it is profitable for them.

    • Progress, they said. says:

This is what the Growth -At- Any-Cost vermin want for Jasper County. Money for them. Crime, chaos and third world filth for us.

      • Gary B says:

Long-term planning is not about making long-term decisions; it is about understanding the future consequences of today’s decisions. – Gary Ryan Blair

  5. Gay Morrison says:

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!
My property tax is already ridiculously high!!
My school tax is even higher than the actual
County portion! My pension should just be sent to the tax man now. I don’t really have anything left after they get finished now.

The powers that be in this county, that I truly love, is only forcing me to think of selling and moving out of this county to another. I feel for the city folk. I really do! They have it worse than I do. Between the taxes and the ridiculous utility bills they already are selling and running out of the county. Have you drove through town lately? Most every single house has a for sale sign in the yard. Who is going to buy those beautiful homes? Once they see what the taxes and utilities cost they are going to run as fast as they can.

Thanks to all of the powers that be, you have hornswackled this city to bankruptcy and you are slowly but surely doing it to the county also. For such a wonderful and beautiful place, in my opinion, the best in Georgia, it is almost dead. Dying a slow but sure death.
All of you that are participating are to blame!

  6. Jasper Co Citizen says:

As a Jasper County resident, I have no desire to pick up the tab for the cities of Monticello and Shady Dale. In the case of Monticello, there are obviously some financial malfunctions which I personally don’t care to take on via my tax bill. The City of Monticello made their bed and now they must lie in it without the assistance of county residents’ tax monies.

  7. Richard says:

TWG:  I lived through the consolidation of Duval County and Jacksonville, FL into the “bold new city of the south.”  I moved from the area but my in-laws suffered the rest of their lives due to this consolidation.

I watched what happened in other areas that did this also, like Richmond County, Augusta,GA  The county residents are now suffering just like my in-laws did in FL.  I have yet to see a consolidation that didn’t adversely affect the majority of residents.  I would hope your residents will become more informed than those I mentioned above and vote against this effort.
