BOC APPROVES SALMON’S “DEER CAPITAL” SIGNS AS WELL AS OTHER SIGNS TO BE PUT UP ON HIGHWAYS

October 2, 2018

Last night the BOC discussed putting up signs for all to see as they enter and leave Jasper County on the major highways—Highways 11, 212, 83, and 16.

One of the signs was the “Deer Capital” signs that Karen Degges and Craig Salmon teamed up to buy—and sell to supposedly make money.  Salmon pledged at that time he would pay for the signs if they did not sell.  Remember?

COUNTY ORDERED SIGNS & SALMON PLEDGED HE WOULD PAY FOR THEM

At the October 6, 2014 BOC meeting Comm. Salmon made a statement that he would pay for the 25 “Deer Capital” signs that Karen Degges pushed the BOC to order.  The cost would be $35 per sign for a total cost of $875.

See video of the entire discussion. Comm. Salmon’s comments come at 5:20 on the video. He said he was willing to pay for the signs to help “advertise” Jasper County if they did not sell.

The signs never did sell (maybe 2 or 3), so the county took them out of the public works budget (read the article at the link above), and they have been stored ever since.

The BOC agreed last night to put up Piedmont Academy Baseball Champs (5 years in a row) and Purple Heart County signs.  According to the information in the agenda packet, Piedmont Academy will pay for 100% of their signs, while the American Legion will pay for 50% of their signs with the county picking up the balance.

The following is copied from the agenda packet:

The reply to Piedmont Academy is for Piedmont Academy to pay for the Piedmont Cougars Baseball Championships signs and Piedmont Academy to pay for one third of the new GDOT sign post program costs.

The reply to The American Legion is for the American Legion to pay for one half of the Jasper County Purple Heart signs and the American Legion to pay for one third of the new GDOT sign post program costs.

The BOC has played favorites for several years.  Each year they use taxpayer money to promote themselves in the Hurricane football program.   This questionable use of taxpayer money started in 2013 and has continued through this year.  Commissioners, before this group, always paid for ads in any football program out of their own pockets, as they should do.  This is not an expense the taxpayers should be paying as they get no benefit from it.

Taxpayers should expect Salmon to live up to his promise and reimburse the county $875 and the BOC to reimburse the $175 for the program ad this year as well as the cost over the previous five years.

Citizens, be informed and stay informed!  Only by being informed, can the citizens understand what is being done and talked about, and then press our officials to make good decisions for everyone in Jasper County.  That is our goal with the Taxdogs blog.
